Lewis T. Ives
Oil on Canvas
This piece by Lewis Ives is a classic 19th century American governmental portrait. The red curtain draped across the background and Alger’s stiff, serious pose provide an academic air to the painting. Ives studied in Paris and Rome under the artist William Page, known as “the American Titian” for his appreciation of the Italian artist’s work. It is possible that some influence of Page is present in Ives’ painting, as similarities can be seen between the treatment of skin and hair in the two artists’ work.
